Description
Canopus Note is a notebook produced by Yamamoto Paper in Japan, using a newly developed paper called Canopus. This paper was created following the end of Cosmo Airlight production in 2022, through a process of repeated testing to achieve a surface that is soft to the touch, smooth for writing, compatible with various inks, and capable of showing color shades clearly.
The Canopus paper has a weight of 73 gsm and is designed as plain text paper without printed lines, allowing for free use. It comes with an underlay sheet featuring 12 mm grid and 6 mm ruled lines. The paper thickness was chosen after multiple evaluations, considering transparency, smoothness, and writing comfort. At 73 gsm, the thickness measures about 120±3 µm, approximately equivalent to 150 gsm in coated paper, making Canopus a lightweight yet substantial writing paper.
The notebook is thread-stitched, with each sheet sewn at 12 points spaced about 15 mm apart for durability, allowing the book to open flat or fold completely without pages detaching. After stitching, the book undergoes a back straightening process, where even pressure is applied along the spine to prevent bulging and maintain a defined shape. The notebook also features rounded corners to prevent bending and maintain its form during long-term use.
The name Canopus refers to a bright star located near the horizon in Japan. It is said that the star becomes invisible during times of war or turmoil, symbolizing peace. Yamamoto Paper named this paper Canopus in the hope that peaceful times will come from the acts of “writing” and “drawing.”
